Team coaching is at the heart of organization development, as organizations are effectively networks of teams. Learn how I partner with leaders to develop high-performance teams.
Team Development = Team Building, Training, Facilitation, Consulting, Mentoring + Coaching
Team coaching is a partnership with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their potential. This core characteristic of coaching applies equally to team and individual coaching.
At the same time, team coaching overlaps with other team development modalities. As the ICF Team Coaching Competencies explain, “Team coaching exists under this umbrella of team development, along with the following modalities: team building, team training, team consulting, team mentoring, team facilitation, and team coaching.”
Effective team coaches deliberately and adaptively cross over all team development modalities to help teams achieve their goals. Facilitation and coaching overlap most frequently, while at times a coach may employ more directive approaches such as training, consulting, or mentoring. Team building often serves as the initial modality in a team coaching engagement.
High Performance Teams Need High Performance Coaches
Over the years, I’ve partnered with hundreds of teams across dozens of organizations, and no two teams are alike. Team coaching is one of the most demanding practices in coaching — requiring both finesse and robustness, and testing a coach’s depth of resourcefulness and capacity for on-the-edge performance. In other words, developing a high-performance team requires a high-performance coach. That very challenge is why I love team coaching.

Career Summary
I’ve worked with teams large and small throughout my three decades of front-line business experience — first in banking at Morgan Stanley and Deutsche Bank, then as a serial startup entrepreneur. As a leader, executive, and founder, I’ve faced and learned from the many challenges of building high-performing teams in complex environments. These insights led me to found Agile Organization Development in 2017 — now a global collective of 30-plus expert coaches and OD practitioners — where we equip client leaders and teams with essential KSAs (knowledge, skills, and abilities) to drive change and innovation. I hold an MBA from INSEAD, where I now lecture, coach, and train in executive programmes, blending the latest insights in management science with everyday, practical application.

I’ve found a common-toolkit approach to be highly effective in team coaching. Over the years, I’ve built an extensive library of “mental models” — KSA (knowledge, skills, and abilities) tools — drawn from my work with countless client teams. Tried, tested, and refined for practical use, these models accelerate the impact of my team coaching practice.
